Bob Veto has had a career of nearly 45 years in education, most of it in independent schools.
Bob made the move to independent education after four years of teaching in the Winston-Salem (N.C.) public school system, when he was hired in 1979 to teach History at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, PA. While there, Bob wore many hats, including History Department Chair, Dean of Students, and Director of the Boarding Program. “I was blessed with a couple of really good mentors at Shady Side, and inspired by some incredibly talented colleagues,” Bob says. Bob’s wife Martha was employed at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children during this period, and their two children, Rachel and Charlie, were born during the years that Bob and Martha lived on the Shady Side campus. During the latter years of his 11-year career at Shady Side, Bob completed his doctoral degree in History at Carnegie Mellon University.
The Veto family enjoyed seven great years in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where Bob served as Upper School Head at Cape Henry Collegiate School from 1990 to 1997 (with one year serving as both Upper School and Middle School Head). In the fall of 1997, Bob took over as Headmaster of Trinity Collegiate in Darlington, South Carolina, a start-up Episcopal School which he served for eleven years during the school’s infancy and adolescence. In 2008, Bob was tapped to lead Stratford Academy in Macon, Georgia. He served as Head of School at Stratford for 11 years, during which time two major capital campaigns and three major building projects were successfully undertaken. Bob has recently completed a two-year interim position at Charleston Collegiate School.
Bob’s friends know him to be a rabid follower of Tar Heel athletics, as well as a hiker, a reader, a mediocre golfer, and a lover of good music of all types. He and his wife Martha have been happily married since 1977 and have two children. Bob is eager to share his knowledge and experience with other independent schools.
