Dennis M. Campbell

Dennis M. Campbell is an educator, theologian, author, and consultant. Dr. Campbell works with non-profit schools and organizations as a consultant advising about governance, management, organization, and planning. He is Vice Chairman of The Duke Endowment, a trustee of the National Humanities Center, a director of the Montpelier Foundation, and of The Association of Boarding Schools, of which he is secretary of the board. He is a member of the Headmasters Association.

Most recently he served as Headmaster of Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Virginia from 1997-2015. Before that, he was Dean of the Divinity School and professor of theology at Duke University from 1982 until 1997.

Prior to his appointment as dean, he was a professor and college and university administrator. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, from which he holds the A.B. and Ph.D. degrees; and he is a graduate of Yale University Divinity School. A noted speaker and author, Dr. Campbell is widely known for his work in educating moral life, ethics, and character formation. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Boys School Coalition and the Membership Commission of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. He is a former chair of WHTJ, the Commonwealth Public Television in Virginia, and a former director of FHI 360, an international company devoted to medical and bioethical research and service — especially for women's and children's health. Dr. Campbell and his wife, Leesa, are the parents of two children.
